Oh, I would be devistated! My only suggestion is to grab some of the cat's food and try luring it to you with that.

I'll bet if this cat is caught, the owners will not leave it out for showings any more. I've never understood why anyone would take that chance.

Seller should confine the cat to a room when showings are expected. Did the agent just leave doors open while showing?

that's not the agent's responsibility or fault that the cat slipped out....the cat should be placed in a room with a sign on the door to not open it.... or have someone care for the cat at their home until the home is pending....

Some say that setting the cats litter box outside will help draw them back home. Sometimes cats will come back 2-3 days later. Post some signs around the neighborhood, and check and see if your local facebook has missing pets group. And let humane society know in case someone turns it in, or it's pick up by them.

That's always a challenge when a cat is in a home. Most we run into are scared of visitors so they hide, but once in a while, they will want to share the showing with us. We use special treats to get our back when they run off. I wish you luck.

Try a can of catfood? Too bad the seller did not have the cat in a cage. It should not be agents' responsibility to safeguard sellers' pets.

I would imagine the seller would be upset. It doesn't take much for these Agents to exercise the minimum amount of care & keep the inside pets inside. Time is of the essence in these situations. Head out in search of the cat with treats it likes. Hope it works out OK!

So sorry to hear about the Cat Escape. However, every seller should be responsible for the care and protection of their belongings ... including a cat. The Agent is trying to sell their home ... not cat sitting. IMHO

ps: Hope Fluffy is found safe and sound. Be sure to put our some cat food!

Will,

It shouldn't be the buyer's agent or buyers responsibility to make sure pets don't escape. If they have warning of course, they should be as careful as possible with the doors, but that should be the extent of it.

I have had an awful lot of cats in my life.. some indoor only some indoor / outdoor all have had a wonderful sense of direction and find home even when they escape. Nearly all return within a day unless they haven't been fixed in which casse they may roam.. a good rule is to always have your pets chipped even the indoor ones though.
Some cats also know their owners voices and will come when called so a walk around the neighborhood by the owner..

For future its best if owners keep cats segregated in the home if its being shown because some cats are natural escape artists.

I always take special note and give advice to all my seller clients in Northern Virginia with pets whether they are dogs, cats or other.

It hard to put the paste back in the tube. In my section of Florida, the coyotes ae likely to find fluffy first.

Clearly the agent should be fired! IMMEDIATELY!!!!

Unless this was a limited service listing, the listing agent should have been present AND anticipated the consequence of the door being open too long or a cat roaming free.

Meanwhile, put out the cat food, fresh every day, after all the raccoons, opossums, armadillos, feral cats and coyotes need to eat too. Always use the community websites and FB to alert neighbors to a wayward fluff on the prowl.

Happened to me once and somehow we got her back!  Wish I had some great advice but I think you have some good suggestions already posted.  Meanwhile, i'd triple check showing instructions and make a few signs to post on the outside of the door and around the house as needed if keeping the cat in one room isn't feasible for the seller....  Good luck!

Oh, the cat stories I could tell. You can shake their treats and see if they come running. Open a can of tuna and put it out. I once had a cat dissappear. Instructions were clearly displayed that agents need to keep the walk up attic door closed. The cat disappeared. A few days later the owner found her stuck in one of the house eaves. She had gotten into the attic and into the eaves then stuck! Another time I had an owner tell me not to let her very shy cat out of the house. I had sort of seen the cat once in the shadows. When my then partner & I were staging the house, we were being very careful. Suddenly, there was a cat in the garage. We captured the cat and safely brought it back into the house. Turns out, it wasn't her cat. It was a stray that she fed. So, make sure you catch the right cat.
