Forbes, a popular business magazine, decided to look at 65 large metropolitan areas, and picked out the top 20 "Coolest Cities" among them. We in Baltimore are proud they named us #14! Forbes used seven data figures from each city to determine their scores, including arts and culture, green space, number of outdoor activities available, professional football and baseball teams (GO BALTIMORE RAVENS AND GO BALTIMORE ORIOLES!) as well as college, restaurants and bars, median age, and migration rate. The Baltimore meropolitan area included Towson, so that would include Towson University and surrounding areas. Here are more details about how Baltimore was named the Forbes 14th Coolest City! So, if you've thought about a COOL place to live, try our city on for size! I'd love to help you move ...

Baltimore Restaurant Week in Full Swing I don't know how I missed the starting of Restaurant Week!!  We love to try new restaurants and Restaurant Week is a great time to test out a new place and see all it has to offer.  Baltimore Restaurant Week started July 27 and will run to August 5, 2012, offering a unique dining experience which encourages guests to dine their way through Downtown. Participating restaurants offer specially selected three-course prix-fixe dinner menus for $30.12 and $20.12. Plus, some restaurants are offering two-course lunch menus for $15.12. Restaurants include some of my favorites such as Della Notte Ristarante located at the corner of President and Eastern Ave., Chameleon Cafe located on Harford Road in Lauraville, Mo's Crab and Pasta Factory off President Str...

Things You See Around Town When you are driving around the City of Baltimore you don't expect to see sights like these.  But some neighborhoods have some great community gardens and are using their little patch of land to provide sustenance for their families and for the neighborhood.  While on my way to a listing appointment last week I stumbled on this little neighborhood garden right in the heart of the City!!  It is possible to liven up the area with just a few seeds.

It's a Code Red Heat Day Today - Here are Some Places to Stay Cool Today is going to be a dangerously hot day.  If you don't have air conditioning or if you need to come in out of the heat here are some places to go to get cool. The elderly, young children and those with health problems often have trouble dealing with the heat. The following are colling centers that will open when the Health Commissioner issues a Code Red Heat Alert. The Community Action Program will operate five centers on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays: · Northern Community Action Center -- 5225 York Road · Southern Community Action Center -- 606 Cherry Hill Road (inside the shopping center 2nd floor) · Northwest Community Action Center -- 3939 Reisterstown Road · Southeaste...

Welcome to The Pikes In Pikesville Two weeks ago we completed an offer at The Pikes in Pikesville.  A few years ago we talked about  various places that contracts are signed  like bowling alleys, churches, synagogues, front steps and even on the wing of a plane. My most recent was in a former movie theater now a restaurant. The sellers were having dinner and I was waiting for the contract offer. It came through in time for TLH and me  to meet the family at the The Pikes. It is fun combining social life with business. I was able to slip to another table with each owner while signatures were obtained and the contract ratified. The others, not involved in the transaction, continued with dinner and lively conversation.     The Pikes is located at 9...

Weather in the Mid-Atlantic has been peculiar this year. My favorite episode was  earlier this month when we had a rainbow over Baltimore.  A slow moving rainstorm hit around 6pm. Around dusk the light looks perfect on the federal red brick fascades. Its a great time of day to photograph urban buildings. On this special evening we were treated with a rainbow that was vibrant and memorable. This photo was taken 3.5 miles north of the Inner Harbor from the University One Condominium in Charles Village. Thanks to social media suddenly a lot of us Charm City natives were out snapping dramatic pictures of the rainbow and sharing it with friends. Here is a picture taken from the Station North neighborhood looking north by my friend Eddie Winter.                 Just how peculiar has the wea...

Mount Washington in Baltimore City 21209 One of my favorite areas in Baltimore City is in the 21209 ZIP code. which  includes many of the things that make Baltimore attractive. Mount Washington is in the northwestern part of the city, and combines many of the pleasures of country living with easy access to the attractions of downtown Baltimore by way of the Jones Falls Expressway and Maryland's Light Rail System. The area is home to some 1,600 residences from 100-year-old mansions to modern condo developments. If you're looking for Georgian and Victorian architecture, this is a good spot to visit.   Though it is now within the city limits, Mt. Washington began in the mid-nineteenth century as a place to escape Baltimore's oppressive summer heat. When t...

Guilford in Baltimore                       Guilford Mansion    Guilford is one of those neighborhoods that seems to have grown up among its gardens and gracious ways. Originally comprised of patents granted to British citizens from the mid-1600s through the 1700s, the area was valued for its "gentle swells, which has many beautiful views of the city and bay." The entire area sold in 1780 as confiscated property to a Revolutionary War General who gave Guilford its name. The area then passed through other hands until it was sold to the Guilford Park Company. Planning of the landscape design began in 1911 under the direction of Frederick Law Olmsted, and active development of Guilford began in 1913.                    Johns Hopkins University   This residential area of almost 700 homes h...

Invest in Baltimore’s Remington neighborhood. Located in the 21211 zip code in Baltimore Maryland and sandwiched between the prosperous Hampden and Charles Village communities, Remington is a centrally located neighborhood in Baltimore City where you can still purchase a home for under $115,000.   There are four main factors contributing to the renewed interest in Baltimore’s Remington neighborhood; the expansion of the neighboring Johns Hopkins University community to the north, the 11-acre commercial development known as 25th Street Station to the east; Druid Hill Park to the south, and the success of the Hampden community to the West. The sleepy Remington neighborhood is finally at the right place at the right time. Now is the time to invest in Baltimore’s Remington neighborhood.    ...

Pikesville Homes in Maryland. Pikesville sits northwest of Baltimore City and just about all of it is in  Baltimore County.  Like many old areas, though, the city/county dividing line was drawn after the area grew up and so the line runs right through some properties.  Not long ago I sold a house on Seven Mile Lane that was Pikesville but also Baltimore City.  What's interesting is that some homes in this area are actually in both the city and the county. Yep, you pay taxes in both, you can vote in either one and can choose city or county schools. When one comes on the market, it has a unique selling advantage. There are so many different homes in Pikesville and you can find something for every one. Here are just a few examples.   Take a look at this Contemporary mid century rancher ...

Speechless Sunday (Almost) - Ahoy Me Maties The USS Constellation is moored in The Inner Harbor and ready to be boarded. Visiting the USS Constellation and other floating museums such as The Chesapeake and The Taney are moored in Baltimore's Inner Harbor is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon with the family.  There are guided tours available along with self guided tours.  Lots to learn, especially during the bicentennial celebrations of the War of 1812.

The Star Spangled Sailabration in Baltimore, MD * June 13 - 19, 2012 has been featuring "grey hulls" from the U.S. Navy, Britain and Canada, tall ships from around the world and a picture-perfect blue sky for the Blue Angels Air Show. Baltimore's Inner Harbor was the place to be this weekend! Everybody and their dog came out to tour the ships, chat with sailors from around the world, enjoy international music and gasp over the aerial acrobatics performed by the Blue Angels.I took advantage of the hundreds of fantastic photo opps (of course) - here is a little snapshot of the Star Spangled Sailabration:
