The McColl center for visual art was named after the former CEO of Bank of America. He retired a few years ago. Actually he retired in 2001, so he probably wasn't involved too much in this current banking mess.  The location of the McColl center was bought by Bank of America after sitting empty for ten years after a fire destroyed most of the building. It used to be a church downtown. The bank bought it with the intention of creating an urban artist's community, according to the center's website. The community says that it is committed to being a stand out program where artists can come to be artists and create stuff for the community. The center owns condos across the street from the center that they offer to artists who they want to be artists in residence. To me, that sounds like a p...

I blogged earlier about the Charlotte Blues Festival, that's still happening this weekend. I wanted use this space to call out a joint that has been hosting blues acts since 1973. It's located in the Elizabeth neighborhood in Charlotte NC, and was established when the neighborhood and Charlotte looked a lot different.  The place started out as a pub - a risky business in Charlotte in 1973. It later hosted local musical acts and then moved on to hosting national acts. The first big show they had was the Dixie Dregs. Musicians such as Stevie Ray Vaughn have played at the Double Door. Their website includes a story about how Eric Clapton came to the bar after his huge show at the Charlotte Coluseum and sat in with one of the bands there. The Double Door doesn't feature strictly blues anymo...

Like I've posted before, Charlotte offers quick and easy ways to get out for the weekend, or for a week off. There is so much to do around Charlotte, that it would take a long time to do it all.  If you're into hunting, please don't do it in Charlotte. There are a ton of people around and, I just don't think it will end well. Even though you can see deer inside the city limits, just don't do it.  There are all kinds of places to hunt outside of Charlotte though. And if you don't like to hunt, but just want to shoot guns, there are places near Indian Trail that ar dedicated skeet shooting ranges. Indian Trail is not far from Charlotte and offers easy access to the city from several major arteries. On surface streets, an Indian Trail resident can get to Charlotte on Monroe Road. I485 make...

One of the best parts of living in a big city is that there are tons of consignment stores. There are big one and small ones. There are stores that sell sports equipment like Play it Again Sports in Matthews. There are also stores that just sell furniture like Consignment 1st, also in Matthews. It is an advantage of living in a large metropolitan place like Charlotte because you can find so much good stuff there. In Charlotte there are tons of fine stores, if that's your bag. But there are also tons of stores that sell that merchandise second hand after the person who originally bought it is finished using it. It's a kind of recycling where you don't have to destroy the thing to make something new out of it. I guess that make it super earth friendly. There are tons of people who want se...

Oh dear, how to decide.  Charlotte is right in the middle of North Carolina, from east to west. That makes it really easy to get to the beaches of North or South Carolina or to the Appalachian mountains.  Which is better.  It's a good problem to have to ask that question. In terms of drive time, it is much quicker to get to the mountains from Charlotte. It is only about two hours to Asheville. It can be done mostly on interstates or divided highways. However, the drive to Wilmington is four hours and much more difficult. It follows roads which are interstate quality in some areas but not in others. So there is a ton of slowing down and speeding up. Once you get to Wilmington, its great though. There are a ton of beaches and Wilmington has a few barrier islands and beaches that are fun t...

Davidson's brightest hope may have been dashed today as Stephane Curry fell down on the court after hurting his ankle. It happened as Davidson played Furman, a university to the east of Charlotte, just across the border in South Carolina. This is a big blow for the team which has been highly ranked in the NCAA tournament in recent years. Davidson is located near Charlotte NC and is a small liberal arts university. The basketball team doesn't play in a big huge conference like the ACC or anything, but Davidson has made a name for itself by playing well and advancing deep into the tournament in March. Stephane Curry has been a big part of that success in the last couple of years. He is the son of Dell Curry, a former player for the Charlotte Hornets and a great three point shooter. Davids...

Ahhhh more market reports... Agents always write about their area and why they think it's the best place to live! That's a GOOD thing! When Realtors write blogs about the areas they live in it's because they are experts there. These reports give other agents the inside scoop if their client is looking in an unfamiliar area. We all have been there... We specialize in one 5 - 10 mile area and have a "good idea" with whats farther out. So here's my answer to those agents not too familiar with the south end of Charlotte and areas 5, 6 and 7 or to be more specific, Zip codes 28277, 28226, 28210, 28134, 28209, 28273, 28217and 28211. The Big Picture - JanuaryOn average, areas 5, 6&7 had 519 new listings come on the market with an average list price of $390,738. On average 162 went under contra...

In an unfortunate series of events, Julius Peppers, a star defensive end for the Carolina Panthers football team has been seeking to leave the team when his contract expires. He recently stated, according to the Charlotte Observer, that he will ask for a trade if the team spends the money to tag his as a franchise player.  I'm not really clear on what the tagging means, but since he is a free agent, if the panthers put down some money, they can say that Julius is a player that is irreplaceable and that they have a stake in his career and try to trade him. Otherwise, his contract has expired and he can do whatever he wants. Julius hass made it pretty clear that he wants to get out of Carolina. He said that he would ask for a trade if the team tagged him but hasn't made any other statemen...

It has come and gone. I'm talking about the first of two Carolina-Duke games this year. Each year, ESPN goes overboard to bring us a basketball game between two schools that really, really dislike each other.  This year's game saw the seniors of carolina sweep the Blue devils at their home stadium for the fourth year in a row. Carolina also scored more than 100 points on Duke, which is a feat nobody has acomplished in quite some time.  This year's matchup was particularly strained because it is Tyler Hansbrough's last year playing at Chapel Hill and because both teams are ranked in the top ten teams in the NCAA. Carolina is ranked as number three in many polls and duke is ranked as number five or six, depending on who you trust.  The game was hard fought and saw Tyler Hansbrough take an...

The furniture manufacturer IKEA is openining one of its stores in the Charlotte NC Area. The store is 350,000 square feet. The Charlotte Business journal says that they will decorate a corner of uptown Charlotte with a fully furninshed room. I guess, so people can relax there on their walk home.  The store is one of the largest stores that the chain operates. It will have several model homes inside the store and a ton of floor space to show off all of their furniture sets. They are known for inexpensive furniture that is assembled by the consumer at home. There are several advantages to this setup. One is that some of the pieces are small enough that you can get them in your car. That cuts down on the amount of stuff you have to have delivered or shipped. The store is located in Northea...

Lots of people don't know this, but Charlotte NC, like a lot of cities, had a streetcar system in the first part of the 20th century. A $400 million dollar plan to build a new one is in the works. Charlotte already started a light rail project and has completed one line of light rail that connects Pineville with uptown Charlotte. That means that the rail line runs roughly from the southwest to the center of town.  The new streetcar line is slated to run from the south east at Eastland mall to the northwest at Beatties Ford Road. Which means that it will criss cross the city in the other direction.   I don't actually know how it will tie in with the existing light rail line or what makes it different. Actually, I do. Streetcars run on the city streets with traffic, which gives them bette...

Know the Beatles song? "Will you still be sending me a valentine, birthday greetings , bottle of wine?" Today's notion that all things electronic are best ...is not always best. The essence of AR is to connect electronically. I like that added extension of my interaction. But some things still need a personal touch. Electronic Valentine's Day greetings from loved ones ...don't cut it. See how well it goes over with your wife when you tell her  "the card and flowers are in your e-mail box".  This applies to Birthdays and just about every holiday and special occasion.. except for Columbus day. It's ok to send electronic cards on Columbus Day. Now you're probably wondering where I'm going with this. Simply, the hand written word has a positive and powerful effect. With all the e-mails, blo...

By optimizing the website and/or web pages the Search Engine Results Page SERP will yield a larger amount of visitors from search engines. We love the real estate agents we work with. We respect how hard they work - selling, negotiating, and closing deals. Inspections, repair requests and negotiations, loans, appraisals, surveys - we understand it.  The stress they endure on a day to day basis is beyond that of most jobs. So, no one said they had to be great photographers on top of all that. Photography is an art. One that is only learned with tons of practice. For real estate, you SHOULD shoot in manual mode. That means no point and shoot cameras allowed! One needs to be well versed in such things as aperture, shutter speed, and their relationship to one another. Furthermore, it is important to understand composition, white balance, ISO, and other photography aspects to get the best shots. All this doesn't even scratch t...
